Brief Description and Possible Uses

The Dashboard is designed to answer the questions, "What is going on in all of my courses?" and "What do I need to do next?"

The Dashboard consists of three main elements: Global Navigation across the top of the page, a to do list with upcoming events on the Sidebar, and the a global Activity Stream that comprises the main body of the page.

Navigating the Dashboard

The Global Navigation runs across the top of the home page and is available on every page in Canvas. The Global Navigation consists of a courses, assignments, grades, and calendar menus. This navigation contains information that is specific to each user in Canvas.

Under the ‘Courses’ menu, you will see a list of all of the courses you are enrolled in.

Under the ‘Assignments’ menu, there is a list of all of the assignments you are associated with. For instructors, you will see a list of assignments that need to be graded, and students will see a list of assignments that need to be turned in.

When students click on 'Grades', they will see a list of all of their courses. They can click on any course and see the grades for assignments and quizzes in that course.

The Dashboard offers two different views of the calendar: in the main navigation you can view a traditional calendar with events for all courses, and in the right navigation, you can view a text list of upcoming events.

The to do list is on the Sidebar and contains a list of items and events that need to be completed in the course. Instructors will see assignments that need to be graded and students will see assignments that need to be turned in.

Also in the Sidebar is your To Do list. As the name implies, the To Do list provides links to items that need to be attended to. For example, the To Do list on a teacher's dashboard could contain links to submitted student assignments that need to be graded while the To Do list on a student's dashboard could contain links to new work or study assignments to be done.

Below the To Do list is your Coming Up list. The Coming Up list contains links to information about upcoming calendar events and other scheduled items.

The main body of the Dashboard contains a stream of recent activity for all of your courses. There are announcements, calendar events, discussion postings, due dates, and grade updates. This activity stream helps you to stay on top of what is going on in the course and quickly post or respond to Discussions.
