How do I turn on my firewall within Windows XP?

Firewall software helps guard your computer against potentially harmful content on the internet. It is a requirement to have firewall software enabled to register and use your computer on the MCLA dorm network.

The following instructions outline how to turn on your firewall on for users of Windows XP

Windows XP Users:

1. Click the “Start” menu

2. Click “Control Panel”

3. In Control Panel click “Network Connections”

4. In Network Connections right click on "Local Area Connection"

5. Select "Properties" from the menu

6. Click the "Advanced" tab located to the right

7. Windows XP SP1 users will see the following screen:

Select the option to "Protect my computer or network". Click ‘Ok’ to confirm your selection that turns on the firewall.

For Windows XP SP2 users you will find the following option instead:

Select the option ‘Settings”. On the firewall settings area you will be able to turn on your firewall.
