Description
Canvas is a learning management system (LMS) that enables MCLA faculty to create and manage web-based learning and post course materials electronically. The Academic Technology department works with faculty members to effectively use this tool in their courses. Canvas's parent company Instructure has created in-depth tutorial for how to use Canvas from the perspective of both a student and a faculty member.

Supported Browsers
Canvas supports most major web browsers available to users at the present time. The exact specifications and browsers that Canvas currently supports can be found on their website Here.

User Tutorials
There are two major tutorials available to users on the Canvas website, one tutorial for students and one for faculty. The student tutorial covers common topics such as how to complete assignments, how to participate in class discussions, and how to check your grades. The faculty tutorial covers common topics such as how to structure a class, how to take attendance, and how to import class material among other topics. These two tutorials can be found at the links below, along with a link to guides for using the student and instructor Canvas mobile apps:
The wiki is in the midst of an aggressive information-gathering stage. For now, we'll be using the following template on feature pages to gather information. Later, we can look at organizing the information in a more user-friendly way. If you have suggestions for how the feature pages, the main page, or FAQ pages should be organized or formatted, please email allison@instructure.com
FAQ 2
<ul>
<li>FAQ pages should be separate pages if you think they could apply to multiple features. Otherwise, put the FAQ text directly on the feature page.
<li>There are several pages that have been orphaned to make the wiki easier to maintain. If you find a page that is orphaned that you think shouldn't be (i.e. for an F.A.Q. page, go ahead and relink it and let me know. In about four weeks, we will delete orphaned pages to eliminate confusion.
</ul>

Improvements we'd like to see in the near future:
<ol>
<li> Auto-collapsing section headers at page load, especially for the Screencast index page and other indices like it; direct links to sections should expand just the section needed
<li> Fix top menu to reflect user needs
<li> Adjust style sheet so that headers are legible, different font perhaps, and more white space on the page
<li> Consider two-column layouts
<li> Higher resolution screenshots and figure out why the px width image option isn't working
<li> Larger font size with less variation in the different kinds of headers
<ol>

*Choose a printer from the list of available printers (above) and use the link located in the "Link for Windows XP/7/8" column.
*You might be warned that the download contains an executable, click "Run" from the dialog box.
*You will be prompted again warning you that the program's publisher cannot be verified. Just click "Run" again.
*The printer installation tool will launch. Click 'Next' and the installation of the printer will proceed.
*You will be prompted to set a username and password for the printer. Select 'Use specified user account" then enter mclaad\ then your A number (example:mclaad\a10001000) and password.
NOTE: Occasionally this window appears behind other windows. If after a few seconds it doesn't appear, minimize or close your other windows to locate it.
*Click “Ok”.
*In a few seconds, the printer will be installed. If you would like to check to see that it is available, click the "Start" menu, and then click "Printers and Faxes".
NOTE: The installation should not set the printer as the default printer on your computer. You will have to choose the appropriate printer each time you print. Typically, this can be done by choosing the printer from a list as in this example from the Internet Explorer print dialog.

You and your supervisor may have arranged a plan for you to work from home. MCLA Information Technology is here to support you as you work remotely.

Here are some resources that you can use to make your work easier.

----

Cloud Resources

Many of MCLA’s IT resources are publicly available on the Internet and are hosted by the service directly. We consolidate most of these tools into the campus Portal found at: https://portal.mcla.edu
Some of the services you will find there are: Office 365 (email, calendars, OneDrive etc..), Canvas, Banner, Dynamic Forms, TimesheetX, Handshake, SchoolDude.

VPN

MCLA’s VPN (virtual private network) is software that “tunnels” your computer’s network traffic securely over the Internet, connecting you directly to the campus. This is another way to connect to the local resources available on the campus, local drives, etc… Read more

Local storage

MCLA provides file storage to departments and individuals through what is known on campus as drive S: (groupshare) and drive H: (homeshare). By using MyLab or VPN, you can access these resources from off campus.

Voicemail

By default, MCLA’s voicemail system will send your voicemail to email. If you have this feature enabled, you can access Office365’s Outlook mail to listen to your voicemails. Read more here about changing voicemail settings.

Getting Help

You are not alone when you work remotely, MCLA’s HelpDesk is available to provide support during business hours and our on call staff will respond to emergency outages 7 days a week. Write helpdesk@mcla.edu, call (413) 662-5276 or click “Get Help” on the Portal page to contact us.

Passwords
Whether working remotely or on campus, MCLA secures its systems by use of a centralized username and password. These credentials are the same for almost all of our systems. If you are having difficulty with your username and password, visit this page for support.

Security
Working remotely presents many of the same security hazards as any online work but it can be more difficult to determine the authenticity of communications when you are remote.

MyLab
MyLab allows you to access virtual computer that resides in our datacenter. This desktop works in exactly the same way an MCLA Thin Client would on the campus, providing direct access to applications and local resources such as your departmental shared drives and home drive. Read more

Timesheets

If you need to submit your time through the State’s HRCMS, you can visit https://mass.gov/masshr or locate the link in the Portal

Skype

Built in to Office365 is Skype a powerful communications tool that lets you chat, voice call, and create online meetings with video, screen sharing and nearly unlimited attendees. If you need to have a face to face with your team, Skype is the tool. Read more

OneDrive

As part of the MCLA community, you have the ability to store 1000GB of files in Microsoft’s cloud storage product, OneDrive. Any file in OneDrive can be shared with your team, just you, or the world. Read more

FindTime

When working remotely, finding time to meet or schedule groups of people becomes even more complex. Let the FindTime polling tool help you organize your group's next meeting. read more

The MCLA wireless network can be used in every campus building and all resident areas.

Resident Students:

While this does give sufficient coverage in resident areas, Computer Support Services still recommends that students use the wired data ports in their rooms for the most reliable network connectivity. The wired data ports ensure 1000MB back to the switch in each building, while each access point "shares" 54MB of connectivity among the various computers that attach to it.

Requiring students to have laptop computers allows its cost to be considered for financial aid use and scholarships. We believe that this laptop is much like purchasing textbooks or learning supplies; it is an important tool for College level work and over 90% of students already bring a computer to MCLA with them. However, for students who have documented that they exhausted all financial aid opportunities, the College will provide a College-owned laptop on a semester by semester basis. Requests must be made to the Laptop Advisory Board. The Board will meet to consider waivers and requests to use College-owned equipment on a semester by semester basis

There are various PINs that you must know when using Self-Service Banner. This guide will help you determine what PIN number you need and where to go to find it.
<br>
<b>Note: A Self-Service Banner PIN is different than your MCLANET password.</b>
<br><br>
Initial PIN
If you are logging into Self-Service Banner for the first time, your initial PIN is your birthday in MMDDYY format (6 digits). For example, if your birthday was January, 14th, 1988. Your initial PIN would be 011488. The purpose of the initial PIN number is to allow you to set up a login PIN number and challenge question in case you forget the PIN you set. The initial PIN expires as soon as you use it and reset it to a login PIN.
<b>Note:</b> When logging in your USER ID is your ‘A’ number with a capital A.
For more information about logging into Self-Service Banner for the first time see the following guide:
Logging into Self-Service Banner for the first time

Login PIN
The login PIN is a 6 digit number that is set up when you first sign on to Banner with the initial PIN. Once set by you, the login PIN is used to login to Banner on a regular basis moving forward. If you have forgotten your login PIN, see the following guide:
How do I reset my Banner PIN?

Registration PIN
The registration PIN is a 6 digit number that is given to students by their advisor at the time of class registration. At permitted registration times, a student can login to Self-Service Banner using their login PIN. Once logged in they can use the Registration PIN to register for classes online through Self-Service Banner.
For more information about how to register for classes online see the following guide.

Virus Removal Service Procedure

Virus, Worm and Disruptive configurations on the MCLA Student Network
Should a computer on the student network become infected with a virus, worm or become configured in a manner that adversely affects the network, Computer Support Services (CSS) will temporarily separate it from the rest of the system. If a computer has not been patched for a known vulnerability that is deemed to be a sufficient threat to the network, the machine may be disconnected even though it has not yet been infected.

If the problem is caused by a common and widespread worm or virus, CSS will attempt to facilitate the repair by making available the software necessary to remove the virus or patch the system against future infection. In all cases, however, the responsibility for rectifying the problem and demonstrating to CSS that the computer can safely be reconnected to the network rests with the student.

What You Can Do
Should your computer be disconnected from the network, CSS or the Helpdesk will be able to tell you why and will direct you to any patches that have been made available for student access. To avoid losing your network access, keep your Windows computer up to date with patches available through the windows update service. Mac OSX software update should be performed on a regular basis for those users running a Mac. Maintaining virus scanning software will also keep you safe from the ongoing threat of viruses.
