Important Notice: Apple Account Changes for @mcla.edu Users

MCLA is working to provide expanded support for Apple devices and Apple Accounts used with accounts associated with @mcla.edu email addresses. As part of this effort, MCLA is claiming ownership of the mcla.edu domain within Apple’s management systems.

Who does this affect?

  • If your Apple Account does not use an @mcla.edu email address, this does NOT affect you and you can disregard this and no action is needed.
  • If your Apple Account uses an @mcla.edu email address, this process will affect you. If you are using an @mcla.edu email for your Apple Account on your Apple devices (Mac laptops and desktops), iPads (all types and models), iPhones, Apple Watch, Apple TV), Once we commence this process, you will have 30 days to take one of two actions.

What you will see if this affects you

You will receive an Apple notification asking you to choose between transferring it to a Company Account or keep it as a Personal Account.

There are important differences:

Option 1: Transfer Your Apple Account to MCLA

  • Recommended for users issued MCLA owned devices that use @mcla.edu apple accounts:

If you are using a MCLA-owned and issued device (any Apple device) with an Apple Account that uses your @mcla.edu email address, you should transfer your account.

This will result in the following:

  • Files, settings, photos, and passwords remain on the device
  • You can continue using the device as normal
  • If you have subscriptions in the App Store, they will end at the next billing cycle, and access to iTunes media (movies, shows, music) purchased will be unavailable.

To transfer the paid subscription/apps, please review the following Apple documentation for instructions:

Migrate purchases from one Apple Account to another Apple Account - Apple Support

Option 2: Keep Your Account as a Personal Account

Recommended for personally owned devices that use @mcla.edu apple accounts: This will ensure any content, apps, or media on your devices is retained, and your account will remain intact but under a personal email address.

This will result in the following:

  • Your Apple Account remains intact
  • Apps, media, subscriptions, and purchases are preserved
  • You will update your Apple Account to use a personal email address of your choosing (other then @mcla.edu).

Apple provides detailed guidance on both choices here:

If you are asked to transfer your Apple Account or keep it as a personal account

What If I Don’t Take Action Within 30 Days?

Your account and files are not lost.

This will result in the following:

  • Your Apple Account will be assigned a temporary username
  • Example: john.doe@mcla.edu will change to john-mcla.edu@temporary.appleaccount.com
  • Apple will notify you by email with the updated username
  • You can still complete the process afterward, but acting within 30 days is strongly recommended.

To Recap

  • If you have a College owned device and its associated with an @mcla.edu account = Transfer your account
  • If you have a Personal device and its associated with @mcla.edu apple account = Keep it personal
  • If you are Not using @mcla.edu account account = No action needed
