You can view mail in "Explore" view - which allows you to click once on a mail item in one "pane" and see its contents displayed without opening a new window.
#Right click once on the icon for your mailbox or other container
#Select "Explore"
#Adjust the panes to suit by clicking and dragging the horizontal and vertical lines.
