Phase 3: Upgrading to Office 2007

An Office 2007 self-installation process is now available for those who have completed the workshops offered in May and are prepared to make the switch. The May Word, Excel and Powerpoint workshops will be repeated in August. Or earlier if there is enough interest. Call Melissa James x5543 in Lifelong Learning and get on the list.

The installer runs over the campus network and requires that the workstation to be upgraded is logged into the Novell Netware server Birch2. If you log in each morning through a dialog that looks like this and enter your MCLANET User ID and Password, you are a Novell user.

If you are unsure that you are logging into the Novell network correctly. Please read the guide on Logging into Novell

Academic users

Individual academic users who wish to upgrade should email Charlie Cianfarini on FirstClass (or ccianfar@mcla.edu) giving their MCLANET User ID ("A-number"). A reply message will describe how to perform the upgrade.

Administrative users

Administrative users will upgrade when their department upgrades as a unit. This will occur when the director or office manager is satisfied that upgrading will not cause a problem for other critical software used by the department. Several critical software packages have been evaluated and are compatible while some others are not yet. Once an administrative department has determined that it can do the upgrade, the director or office manager should email Charlie Cianfarini on FirstClass (or ccianfar@mcla.edu) giving a list of each department member's MCLANET User ID ("A-number"). While each user will perform the upgrade on his or her own machine, administrative offices will be asked to arrange a day and when all department users will be available to run the process with a member of Computer Support Services in attendance.

All users

As noted before, Office 2007 saves files in a new format. Computer Support had made a patch available that allows Office 2003 users to read and write this new format. All users of Office 2003 or Office XP who have not yet installed the patch are urged to follow the procedure outlined at http://techhelp.mcla.edu/converter.

As usual, contact the MCLA Computer HelpDesk (x5276 or helpdesk@mcla.edu) with any problems.
